Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence

Introduction

Intelligence is not a single general concept. There are multiple facets of intelligence. All those clubbed together to define the intelligence of any individual.


Theory

Howard Gardner gave a different dimension to look towards intelligence in the year 1983 through his book 'Frame of mind: The theory of multiple intelligence'. He suggested that there are broadly eight types of intelligence which contribute to various proportion to define the intelligence of an individual.

  1. Linguistic intelligence (“word smart”)

  2. Logical-mathematical intelligence (“number/reasoning smart”)

  3. Spatial intelligence (“picture smart”)

  4. Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence (“body smart”)

  5. Musical intelligence (“music smart”)

  6. Interpersonal intelligence (“people smart”)

  7. Intra-personal intelligence (“self smart”)

  8. Naturalist intelligence (“nature smart”)
